Turkey, has been a member of Customs Union since 1996, started to its EU accession negotiations in 2005. The membership to the WTO and the Customs Union relations are her pivotal economic involvements laying a free and fair trading environment in Turkey. Her world perspective is developing year by year as well as her stability and economic enlargement.

Today, modern Turkey ranks 17th among the largest economies in the world and 7th in Europe with its GDP reaching almost US $ 500 billion in 2007. The Turkish economy is growing during the last 22th quarters, averagely 7 percent in the last five years. As a result of the eminent change of Turkey’s economic and trade policies in the early 80’s, its foreign trade has constantly boosted, reaching a value of 270 billion dollars in 2007. Between 1980 and 2007 exports of Turkey has increased from 2,9 billion dollars to more than 105 billion dollars. In the 100th anniversary of foundation of Turkey Republic, by the end of 2023, the export target is US $ 500 billion. Turkey is boldly being displayed as one of the ten emerging economies of the world by the leading authorities in the field.

The country has long been investing in modern technology and innovation, thus enabling its producers to take their rightful places in the global packaging industry.

Packaging MaterialsTurkish packaging industry is based on a structure that focuses on high service quality. There are 5000 companies that produce packaging materials, equipments and related supplies in Turkey. Turkish packaging industry is developing rapidly at an average annual growth rate of 10%.

The companies operating in the sector are engaged in production in five main groups, namely; plastic, paper-cardboard, metal, glass and wooden packaging. The total capacity of production of the packaging sector is estimated to be around 4 million tons. In the context of production capacity, for example, one of Turkish glass packaging companies ranks in the world’s top 15.

Production quality has rapidly adapted to the requirements of end users, ISO 9000, ISO 14001, ISO 22000, ISPM 15, recycling certifications, HCCP certifications and European standards are already widely applied. This is why the packaging industry is one of the most developed sectors in Turkey.

Research & development activities and packaging product designs also have world-scale reputation. Rationalization of manufacturing and the environmental measures are the other issues handled in conformity with the global trends in the sector.

As of 2007, export value of the Turkish packaging industry reached almost 2 billion $ US. Turkey is the world’s second largest exporter of FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers). Turkish packaging products are actually exported to more than 180 countries throughout the world.

Destinations are mainly European Union, the CIS and the Middle East countries namely Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Bulgaria, the USA, Italy, the Netherlands, Israel, Romania, Iran, Spain and Greece.

The Institutions that support The Turkish Packology Project

The Turkish Packology Project is being executed by the exporters’ associations namely: The General Secretariat of Istanbul Exporters’ Association, The General Secretariat of Istanbul Mineral And Metals Exporters’ Association, The General Secretariat of Aegean Exporters’ Association, The General Secretariat of Central Anatolian Exporters’ Association, The General Secretariat of Mediterranean Exporters’ Association. Besides these associations, there are many entities such as institutes, unions, associations and education institutions in the Turkish Packing industry. Packaging Manufacturers Association is one of the supporters of the Turkish Packology Project.
